KP Labs and Scanway are expanding their collaboration on optical payloads and in-orbit data processing for future space missions

BREMEN, November 20, 2025 – KP Labs Sp. z o.o. and Scanway S.A., two leading Polish companies in the space industry, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (Memorandum of Understanding, MoU) regarding integrated optical payloads and onboard data processing systems intended for future space missions.

KP Labs provides advanced hardware and software solutions for in-orbit data processing, including DPUs (Data Processing Units), in-orbit management software, and artificial intelligence-based algorithms that enable autonomous operations. Scanway specializes in high-resolution optical instruments and camera systems for Earth observation and in-orbit inspection, and develops advanced optical payloads as part of the SOP (Scanway Optical Payload, SOP), which have been verified in orbit and have established flight heritage. Under the MoU, the companies intend to combine Scanway’s imaging technology with KP Labs’ computing architecture to create compact optical payloads that acquire, process, and transform image data directly in orbit, reducing the need for data transmission to the ground segment and increasing the operational autonomy of satellites.

The agreement outlines cooperation on common optical payload architectures for satellite platforms, the integration of Scanway optical instruments with the DPU unit and KP Labs software, performance analysis of joint applications for Earth observation missions and in-orbit inspections, as well as the coordination of the development of a technology roadmap and its adaptation to the needs of specific customer missions. The partnership also opens up opportunities to develop solutions for space exploration missions and other applications beyond Earth observation, including those supporting operations in deep-space missions. The optical payloads developed through this collaboration are intended to support commercial and institutional space missions seeking more efficient and intelligent optical observation systems.

Both companies are collaborating as part of the CAMILA (Country Awareness Mission in Land Analysis) national satellite constellation program, led by Creotech Instruments S.A. under a contract with the European Space Agency (ESA). The CAMILA program comprises a constellation of Polish observation satellites and ground infrastructure. Scanway supplies telescopes and optical cameras for two satellites, while KP Labs is responsible for the onboard data processing systems, part of the flight software in its DPU, and the EGSE test environment, providing complementary expertise for the mission’s optical segment.
