Scanway is extending its contract with South Korea’s Nara Space to include two further optical instruments for the constellation being built by its partner

Scanway S.A. is expanding its cooperation with Nara Space Technology, one of the leaders in South Korea’s New Space sector, for the third time. The Wrocław-based company will supply two further optical instruments for Earth observation for the NarSha project – South Korea’s first satellite constellation developed specifically to monitor methane emissions. This new order brings the total scope of cooperation between Scanway and Nara Space to four optical instruments and confirms the Company’s capability to deliver advanced optical payloads on a repeat basis for constellation projects.

  • The Company is therefore now in a position to process current and future potential orders more quickly as part of the NarSha constellation being built by Nara Space, which could grow to comprise as many as several dozen units in the coming years

This further expansion of our cooperation with Nara Space Technology from South Korea sends a very important signal to our potential customers, as it confirms that Scanway is establishing itself as a partner capable of successfully developing constellation projects under a repeat-order model. The handover of the first flight model in early June this year marked the end of approximately two years of R&D work and flight testing, which confirmed the functionality and performance of our telescopes – as a result, we are now ready to deliver further flight models much more quickly, with a view to moving towards series production and the ability to support constellations comprising as many as several dozen satellites in the coming years – comments Mikołaj Podgórski, COO of Scanway S.A.

This new order marks a further expansion of the collaboration between Scanway and Nara Space Technology as part of the NarSha project. The Wrocław-based company will supply two further flight models of optical instruments for Earth observation, each comprising two telescopes and capable of imaging in the visible and infrared spectra. The instruments will support the detection of methane emissions as part of the satellite constellation being developed by Nara Space. Delivery is scheduled for the third quarter of 2027, with the mission using these instruments set to launch in early 2028.

The collaboration between the two companies currently encompasses a total of four optical instruments for the NarSha project. A flight model of the first of these was handed over to Nara Space on 8 June 2026. The second instrument is due to be handed over to the partner by the end of 2026. The new agreement, covering the third and fourth instruments, expands the scope of Scanway’s involvement in South Korea’s first satellite constellation for monitoring methane emissions.

The NarSha project is being developed by a consortium led by Nara Space Technology and involves the construction of a constellation of at least 12 microsatellites. Its aim is to identify sources of methane emissions accurately and rapidly – initially in Korea, and potentially in other markets in the future. The consortium comprises Nara Space Technology as project leader, the Climate Technology Centre of Seoul National University, the Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute, and Scanway S.A.

NarSha clearly illustrates how the Earth observation market is changing. Increasingly, the focus is not solely on a single instrument or a single mission, but on building systems capable of regularly delivering high-value data to end-users. Data on methane emissions can be of significant importance to, for example, government bodies, industry or institutions responsible for environmental initiatives, and acquiring such data from orbit allows large areas to be monitored in a repeatable and scalable manner. The expansion of cooperation with Nara Space Technology is in line with Scanway’s strategic development direction, which is to accelerate its transformation into a mass-production supplier of optical payloads for the global New Space sector. The company aims to increase the scale of its deliveries to constellation customers by developing optical instruments used in specialised Earth observation missions. Projects such as NarSha confirm the growing demand for solutions that can be implemented repeatedly across successive satellites and subsequent stages of constellation development.
