Mission objective
In order for astronauts to live and work in deep space, they need access to water. Although water can be sent into orbit, scientists are looking for ways to produce it in space. The EU-funded LUWEX project aims to develop and test an innovative water extraction device to process lunar regolith, which contains sufficient water ice to allow for subsequent purification.

The aim of the project is to develop an innovative prototype for the collection, purification and quality monitoring of water. The water can be easily stored and used directly for consumption and other purposes by astronauts, or subjected to electrolysis to produce hydrogen and oxygen, which constitute a highly efficient combination of rocket fuel.
