The agreement signed on November 8 with Flytronic (a member of the WB GROUP)—a leading Polish manufacturer of unmanned platforms—formalizes a previous letter of intent signed in August. As part of the collaboration, Scanway will develop components for the observation payload. Alongside the PIAST space project and the cooperation agreement with ICEYE, this is another key step in building Scanway’s position in the large and promising defense market.

Having designed, delivered and successfully tested a solution using Scanway’s competencies, Flytronic says it is willing to start talks and business negotiations to implement the product in the solutions it offers. The Gliwice-based company, part of the WB GROUP, is a designer and manufacturer of unmanned aerial systems (including X-FRONTER, FLYEYE and FT-5), proven in the most difficult conditions, including high-intensity conflict.

The initiatives we announced, aimed at entering the promising defense products market, are yielding results. The signing of the agreement with Flytronic S.A. marks the beginning of close cooperation with a leading player in this sector and an opportunity to have a real impact on building the competitiveness of the Polish defense sector on the international stage. The design, delivery, and testing of components developed by Scanway are ultimately intended to give domestic and allied entities an advantage in the global arena of armed conflicts. The expertise we have developed over eight years of advancing observation technologies for the space industry and machine vision for the manufacturing sector provides an excellent foundation for creating a product that significantly enhances the functionality and imaging capabilities of unmanned systems. comments Jędrzej Kowalewski, President of the Management Board of Scanway S.A.

It is worth noting that we have fully secured funding for R&D work under the agreement concluded with Flytronic S.A., which stems from the success of our initial public offering that concluded a few weeks ago. The work schedule has been set for 24 months; however, potential informal discussions regarding the further commercialization of optoelectronic components—including mass production—may begin earlier adds Jędrzej Kowalewski.

Flytronic S.A. is a leading Polish center for the development and production of unmanned aerial platforms. The company’s research and development in the fields of electronics, computer science, and aeronautical engineering are characterized by world-class innovation. To ensure this, proprietary solutions are used to the greatest extent possible. A key feature of unmanned systems is maintaining the lowest possible weight while meeting the ever-increasing requirements and performance characteristics of the aerial platform.

The purpose of the agreement is to develop a prototype optoelectronic sensor capable of performing advanced imaging from unmanned platforms. We have defined detailed specifications for the final product in key areas: imaging requirements, physical and interface requirements, and functional requirements. We now face a period of intensive R&D work before we begin the first tests of the device, but we are confident that we will deliver a product that meets all requirements. The result will be the potential to significantly enhance the functionality and imaging capabilities of future unmanned aerial platforms, which are gaining increasing popularity and recognition year after year among decision-makers in the defense sector at both the national and international levels. says Mikołaj Podgórski, COO and co-founder of Scanway.

The project timeline has been set at 24 months and will include the following phases: concept study, product development, solution integration, implementation, and flight testing. Scanway will be responsible for managing the contract’s execution, including coordinating engineering and design activities, as well as preparing reports. Flytronic will provide and make available the necessary prerequisites for contract execution (including platform component models), support, and a team to test the solutions. Scanway will be the sole owner of the intellectual property related to the developed sensor.

The WB Group is one of Poland’s largest high-tech conglomerates, specializing in the design and manufacture of solutions for the defense and civilian sectors. The group consists of companies offering comprehensive solutions in the fields of communications systems, unmanned aerial, land, and maritime systems, as well as modern combat management systems. Thanks to its advanced research and development infrastructure, the WB Group brings innovative products to market that meet the highest standards of quality and reliability.

About Scanway:
Scanway is a Polish company operating in the field of observation technology and machine vision. The company develops and commercializes two business lines: products for the space sector (optical instruments for Earth observation and satellite self-diagnostics) and for the manufacturing industry (machine vision systems).

Scanway is the only company in Poland—and one of only a dozen or so companies worldwide—to have developed a comprehensive technology for Earth observation and the self-diagnostics of satellites and spacecraft. The company offers complete systems based on its own proprietary algorithms for image processing and analysis. As part of the STAR VIBE mission in 2023, a satellite was launched carrying a imaging system and an optical telescope developed and manufactured in the company’s laboratories; thereby establishing flight heritage and delivering the best images from space ever obtained by Polish satellite instruments. The company is also a key consortium member in Poland’s largest space projects, including EagleEye and PIAST.

The Company also aims to apply space-based solutions in the manufacturing industry. Scanway provides technological solutions tailored to the needs of medium and large manufacturing plants, primarily in the area of quality control. In October 2023, Scanway made its debut on the NewConnect market. For more information:
